Are you ready to adopt?
We are here for you to help you find the perfect match for you for your family for your lifestyle and home.
Adopting a pet is a commitment to take care of the pet for the lifetime of the pet. Your pet becomes a member of your family complete with feelings, love, and familiar attachments. The same as your human family members enter your family with love and attachments to the people who care and nurture them. It is a serious commitment that requires time and funds to properly fill the emotional and physical needs of your new adopted pet. It is all to sad to see beautiful dogs and cats surrendered to a shelter, only because the owner got tired of them and threw them out to possibly be euthanized because they defaulted on their promise to give the pet a forever home when they first brought the pet into their home. You would not send your child to the pound, would you? Please be certain when you apply to adopt, you are prepared to train, care, give medical attention for preventative health issues, vaccinate, and learn how to correct behavior issues without punishment. Remember the worst punishment is abuse and abandonment. Pets are not disposable! There are trainers who can help you overcome small issues before they become big issues!
Make a check list of the following items:
- Do you have medical health plan for your pet? There are pet stores that offer in house pet healthcare. There are pet insurances through the AKC. You can research through the internet for other pet insurances options.
- How will other pets in your home react to the newcomer?
- Is your home suited for the pet you have in mind?
- Can you care properly for your pet in your social and work life obligations?
- Who will look after your pet during vacations and work travel?
- Do the other household members feel open to a new pet?
- Are there family members allergic or intolerant to pet hair and pet dirt?
- Are there any health issues of family members having a pet will affect adversely?
- Have you researched the best breeds to consider for your home and lifestyle?
- Pets are extremely sensitive to loving or stressful environments. A stressful environment can affect your pet’s health and behavioral problems.
- Is there at least one adult in the home who will ultimately be responsible for the pet. You cannot rely on a child to take full responsibility for its care and ongoing needs.
Do You Have?
- Food
- Routine veterinary care
- Licensing according to local regulations
- Collars, leashes, and identification tags
- Kitty litter and box
- Basic grooming equipment and supplies.
Other Considerations:
- What is your expectation of a pet? Do you want a lap dog, a buddy who follows you everywhere, a jogging and hiking buddy, or a watch TV couch potato pooch?
- Remember a young dog requires extra time and patience to teach him proper accepted behavior for barking, chewing, house-breaking, and enough playtime for proper development of bones and muscles.
- Consider which is best for you, a younger or older pet.
- How do you feel about training a pet for good behavior or would you rather have a lay back easy-going friend?
- Do you need a pet who will be reliable with children or one you can take with you when you travel?
- Do you want a pet who follows you all around the house or a more independent character?
- What size dog can your home accommodate?
- Will you have enough room if your dog grows to be bigger than expected?
- What size pet would suit the other people who live in or visit your home regularly?
- How big a pet can you travel comfortably with?
Now that we have said that which must be said, lets look at the best match for you to bring in your newest loving family member with furry feet into your home. Be prepared for barking or meowing for a few days and nights. Your pet is adjusting to the new smells, sounds, people, pets etc. in its new home. It may miss the people and other animals it was with in the rescue shelter. Remember if you were suddenly transferred to new place city state, how would you feel not knowing your new environment? You are the same. Most important your pet needs to know you care for him unconditionally. You will be patient teaching him and he can trust you. He will get regular healthy meals and treats and plenty of clean fresh water.
It is a good idea to wait until you select your new pet before you begin shopping for supplies. Some items, such as food and water bowls or collars and harnesses, depend upon the size of the pet you will be adopting. Remember your pet will grow so try to get things he will not grow out too fast.
Ask us what food your pet is eating. Start off once home with the same diet. Check with your Vet for recommendations for food and diet. We feed our dogs wholesome food with the least amount of preservatives and non-human grade animal parts in them as possible. When you decide to change your pets’ diet do it gradually, start by mixing ¾ to ¼ old food to new food and increase the ratio of new food slowly until the switch is complete. Do this over a week or two. This will avoid your pet developing any digestive upset or diarrhea with too sudden a change in diet.
There are many pets supplies you will need to have when bringing your pet home and after your pet arrives.
